Friends of Hammonasset has recently completed a project to add two new viewing stations on the rear deck of the Meigs Point Nature Center overlooking the salt marsh and the osprey nest platform in that marsh. Although you won’t see any osprey in the nest until they return next spring, there are still plenty of other birds and sights in the marsh. So feel free to stop by and use the permanently mounted binoculars to enjoy the salt marsh vista.
One of the stations is ADA compliant and suitable for viewing from a wheelchair. The other station is standard height with a step up available for children. Both binoculars are equipped with EnChroma Lens technology which will enhance the viewing experience for those with red-green color blindness.
Friends of Hammonasset would like to thank the following partners who helped make this project possible:
Most of the cost for these stations was provided by two grants awarded to us. One grant came from the Allan Louis Loeb Foundation, which promotes projects for the well being of domestic animals and wildlife by supporting 501c3 organizations that benefit animal welfare. The other grant was from the Madison Foundation whose mission is to provide grants to organizations that serve the town of Madison’s social, cultural, environmental, educational and recreational needs. Both foundations have provided grants throughout the years to support our park improvement projects, and we certainly appreciate their generous assistance.
The actual installation of these viewing stations was completed by the park staff who, likewise, have been very helpful on other Friends of Hammonasset projects throughout the years. Thanks for all your help.
